Michael Smith's Memory Lane

The South Australian LEGO community is mourning the loss of one of our most loved exhibitors. Michael Smith passed away suddenly on August 10th 2024. He was 53. Michael had displayed at BrickGambier since 2018 and we have loved seeing his passion for 70’s and 80’s LEGO. Michael was booked to come in 2024 with his 50th Anniversary of the Maxifig Display.

For many years we have wanted to organize a history of LEGO display. Similar to many of the timeline displays seen over the years. With Michael’s passing we have been thinking about how we, LCLUG and BrickGamber, can honour Michael, not only in 2024 but a lasting tribute to Michael and his passion for LEGO.

Then it dawned on us – we can combine a history display with a tribute to Michael. In the LEGO vault in Billund there is a sign “Memory Lane”. This is where they house one of every LEGO set ever made.

Inspired by this, the LCLUG has decided to create “Michael Smith’s Memory Lane”. An annual display showcasing a theme or element of LEGO from the past 92 years.

Each year, LCLUG will decide on a new theme or element such as the development of the LEGO tree or a theme like CITY or Fabuland. Then, collaborating with our amazing exhibitors, we will create a display showcasing an element of the history of LEGO.

We hope this can be a lasting tribute to Michael and his passion for old LEGO. More than anything we aim to keep him in our minds and hearts each BrickGambier for many years to come.
